Digital Signage Display: Smart TV or Commercial? (2026)

Choosing a digital signage display in India? Compare smart TVs and commercial displays on warranty, hours, brightness, app support and price.

8 min read | Oct 9, 2026 | Satyam Shakkarwal

A digital signage display is the screen that shows your menus, offers and notices, and in India you have two choices: a consumer smart TV or a commercial display built for signage. A smart TV is fine for a shop or café that runs its screen through the working day and can live with home-use warranty terms. If the screen stays on 16 to 24 hours, faces a bright window, hangs in portrait or must be covered by warranty, buy a commercial display.

This guide compares the two on what actually decides it: warranty, rated hours, brightness, app support and price. Every figure was checked against brand spec sheets, warranty pages and store prices in India on 9 October 2026.

What Is a Digital Signage Display?

A digital signage display is any screen used to show business content to the public: menus, prices, offers, directions or notices. It can be a consumer smart TV, a commercial signage display (also sold as a signage monitor or LCD signage display), or a large LED wall.

Every setup has three parts. The screen shows the content. The player runs it, either as an app inside the screen or as a small box behind it. The software decides what plays where and when. Wilyer is the software: it runs on the player and lets you update every screen from one dashboard.

Can You Use a Smart TV for Digital Signage?

Yes. Most smart TVs can run digital signage, but how depends on the TV's operating system.

  • Android TV and Google TV (Sony, Philips, TCL, Xiaomi and others): install the signage app from the Play Store. Our guide shows how to turn an Android TV into digital signage.
  • Any TV with an HDMI port: plug in a Fire TV Stick and install the app from the Amazon Appstore. See how to set up digital signage with a Fire TV Stick.
  • Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) consumer TVs: these install apps only from the brand's own store, where every app is reviewed first (Samsung, LG). Loading other apps is a developer-mode feature meant for testing, so a plug-in player is the reliable route.
  • Non-smart TVs: a media player over HDMI does the job. See how to convert any TV into digital signage.

Samsung and LG also make signage versions of their platforms for commercial displays, and that is where signage apps run natively. Wilyer runs on both: see Samsung Tizen digital signage and LG webOS digital signage.

Smart TV vs Commercial Display: What Is the Difference?

The difference is not the picture. It is how long the screen is designed to run, how bright it is, how it can be mounted, how it is controlled, and whether the warranty covers business use.

Samsung India's warranty page says the warranty does not apply "if the product is not used as per its usage specifications (example: Personal, Commercial etc.)". LG India's warranty terms list "damage caused by commercial, business or industrial purpose" and say the warranty "is valid for equipment dedicated to domestic use only". In plain words: put a home TV in your shop, and a failure is your cost, not the brand's.

You will often read that consumer TVs are made for 6 to 8 hours a day. No current Indian spec sheet says so. What the spec sheets do show is the gap: every commercial model we checked states its hours, brightness and portrait support, and no consumer model does.

Smart TV vs commercial display in India: consumer TV warranty 1 year with business use excluded by Samsung and LG India, commercial display warranty 3 years, commercial displays rated for 24/7 while consumer spec sheets state no rating, and 43-inch consumer 4K TVs from about Rs 28,000.

When Is a Smart TV Enough, and When Is It Not?

A smart TV is enough when the screen is simple and replaceable. A commercial display earns its price when the screen runs long, sits in difficult light or carries your sales.

A smart TV is enough when:

  • The screen runs during business hours, not around the clock.
  • It hangs indoors in landscape, away from strong sunlight.
  • You have a few screens and can replace one quickly if it fails.
  • You accept that the brand warranty will not cover shop use.

Choose a commercial display when:

  • The screen runs 16 to 24 hours, as in a hospital lobby, a 24-hour pharmacy or a factory floor.
  • It faces a shop window or a bright atrium.
  • It hangs in portrait, as menu boards and lift lobby screens often do.
  • You are rolling out many screens and need LAN control and a business warranty.
  • It is a display screen for advertising, where a dark screen costs money.

A café running a digital menu board for ten hours a day can start with a 43-inch smart TV and a Fire TV Stick. A hospital lobby screen that never switches off needs a commercial display.

Which Signage TV Setup Works Best?

There are four common setups, and the right one depends on how many screens you run and how hard they work.

  1. Android TV or Google TV with the app. No extra hardware. Good for one to a few screens.
  2. Any TV with a Fire TV Stick. The cheapest player. Check the model first: Amazon's Fire TV Stick 4K Select is the first to run Vega OS instead of Android, so confirm your signage app supports it before buying.
  3. Any TV with a signage media player. A player built for signage, such as the WillBox media player, is designed for 24/7 use and restarts itself if the app stops.
  4. A Samsung signage TV or LG commercial display. The app runs on the display itself, with no box behind it, plus a business warranty.
Four ways to run digital signage on a TV compared: an Android TV with the app from the Play Store, any TV with a Fire TV Stick, any TV with a signage player such as WillBox built for 24/7 use, and a commercial display running the app on its built-in signage platform.

Whatever you choose, test the problem owners complain about most: power cuts. Switch the screen off at the plug, switch it back on, and check that it powers up and the content returns on its own. None of the eight spec sheets we checked promises this, so test one screen before you buy in bulk. Also turn off the TV's eco and auto power-off timers, or it will switch itself off after a few hours. The Wilyer app starts by itself after a power interruption.

How Much Does a Digital Signage Display Cost in India?

A 43-inch consumer 4K smart TV cost ₹27,999 to ₹30,499 on Flipkart and Amazon.in on 9 October 2026 (Philips, LG and Samsung models), and 55-inch models cost ₹37,999 to ₹44,790. Commercial displays from Samsung, LG, Sony and Philips have no public price in India: you get a dealer quote. As a reference point, Sony launched its 43-inch professional display in India at ₹1,00,000 in 2023.

The screen is only part of the digital display board price. Budget for a player if the TV cannot run the app, and for the software: Wilyer Pro costs ₹1,200 per screen a month, with a 14-day free trial. See pricing for current plans.

Compare cost over three years, not the screen price on the day. A cheaper TV that is not covered for shop use can cost more after a single failure.

7 Things to Check Before You Buy a Digital Signage Display

Checklist of 7 things to check before buying a digital signage display: rated hours, brightness in nits, a business warranty, portrait support, how the app runs, power-cut behaviour and remote control.
  1. Rated hours: 16/7 or 24/7, written on the spec sheet.
  2. Brightness in nits for where the screen hangs. Bright windows need more.
  3. A warranty that covers business use, in writing.
  4. Portrait support, if the screen will hang vertically.
  5. How the signage app runs: Android TV, Fire TV, a built-in signage platform or a player box.
  6. Power-cut behaviour: switch off at the plug and check that it comes back on its own.
  7. Remote control: can you schedule on and off times and restart the screen without a site visit?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use My Smart TV as Digital Signage?

Yes. An Android TV or Google TV can run a signage app from the Play Store, and any TV with an HDMI port can use a Fire TV Stick or a signage media player. Consumer Samsung and LG TVs only install apps from their own stores, so a plug-in player is the reliable route for those.

What Is the Difference Between a Signage TV and a Smart TV?

A signage TV, or commercial display, is built for business use: its spec sheet states 16/7 or 24/7 operation, brightness in nits and portrait mounting, and it has a business warranty. A smart TV is built for homes, and its spec sheet states none of these.

What Is the Best TV for a Digital Menu Board?

For a menu board that runs during opening hours indoors, a smart TV with a signage app is enough. If the menu hangs in portrait, faces a bright window or stays on late into the night, choose a commercial display rated for those hours.

How Can I Turn My TV Into Digital Signage for Free?

Most TVs can play images and videos from a USB pen drive at no cost, but you cannot update them remotely or schedule them. To manage the screen from your phone or laptop, start a 14-day free trial of signage software such as Wilyer, with no credit card.

How Do I Know If a TV Is Commercial Grade?

Read the spec sheet. A commercial display states its rated hours (16/7 or 24/7), brightness in nits, portrait support and RS-232 or LAN control, and it carries a business warranty, 3 years on Samsung and LG commercial lines in India. Consumer TV spec sheets state none of these.

Will a Consumer TV Warranty Cover Use in a Shop or Office?

Not with Samsung or LG in India. Samsung's warranty does not apply when a product is not used as per its usage specifications, naming commercial use, and LG excludes damage caused by commercial, business or industrial use.

Getting Started

Start with the screen you have. If it is an Android TV, install the app; if not, add a Fire TV Stick or a signage player, and buy commercial displays only where the hours, light or warranty demand it.
